5G-CARMEN conference and final presentation of results

A conference was held at the Plessi Museum facilities at the Brenner Pass border, with institutional interventions illustrating the 5G-CARMEN project, its technological context, the results obtained.

The attendants were then given the possibility to participate in the demos on the road, thanks to vehicles equipped with the technologies resulting from the 5G-CARMEN project. While crossing the border from Austria to Italy, these vehicles performed the semi-autonomous maneuvers enabled by 5G.

A centralized connected and automated lane change was also tested at the Kufstein border between Germany and Austria and presented to the consortium members.

The Way Towards the Internet of Things: Open Standards vs Silos

The Conference gathered academics, practitioners, officials from National Regulatory and Competition Authorities, the European Commission and representatives of the industry to discuss in a lively and balanced debate the controversies regarding standards and interoperability in IoT.

The panel addressed a particularly promising application of the IoT: self-driving vehicles (SDV). To an increasing extent, SVD are no longer the subject of science fiction. Autonomous vehicles are not just tested in Silicon Valley, late-stage testing is also conducted in Europe. For instance, demonstrations of various aspects of autonomous driving technology have taken place in Turin, Italy, and the transition from the trial phase to the commercial application of the technology can be expected before too long.
The panelists were Ilja Rudyk (European Patent Office), Giovanni Romano (Telecom Italia, 3GPP), Javier Gozálvez Sempere (University Miguel Hernández de Elche) and Lorenzo Casaccia (Qualcomm). The presentation from TIM was focused on mobile networks in providing support to self-driving vehicles and on the important roles European-funded projects play. 5G Carmen was indicated as an important example of how to manage cross-country cross-operator scenarios.
An outcome report of the conference is available here.
